Sunfire?!?
Years upon years have past and I still have no idea why they would center
an episode around Sunfire. Don't get me wrong...using such an obscure
Marvel character scores high points with me. This is a pretty good
episode. A little too much "mushy stuff" between Firestar and Sunfire
for me at age 8, but I gotta give the writer credit for not using the "love
at first site" cliché prevalent in so many other cartoons of the
80s. These two are simply interested in each other and the "L" word is
never used. This episode has held up pretty well over the years.
Though one question still plagues me: Why didn't Iceman simply freeze
the "Fire Monster" just like he did in the intro of every show?
Hmmm...I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this episode. There is no
doubting that it has a solid and interesting plot line and has plenty of
action, but still for me it lacks something. I agree with a lot of what
Jon says about it. There were two or three episodes that I missed altogether
as a child and this was one of them. Perhaps I don’t regard it as
fondly as I do the others because I feel no great sense of nostalgia when
I watch it.
This
rates a little better than average to me. This time the love angle
is done much better. I did think Bobby figured out Sunfire's identity
too easy. Then Firestar knows Sunfire's identity but not the other way
around and she doesn't seem to mind that he is interested in both Angelica
& Firestar! What a player this guy is! All joking aside,
I felt Sunfire's uncle was kind of a waste when plenty of Spidey villains
never made it on the show. I did like the sci-fi aspect; all the
robots and then the fire monster going through the city like a Japanese
monster movie. The highlight for me was Aunt May telling Peter how he's
not very athletic when he couldn't win her a prize.
